The Commission launches the “European Sustainability Award”

On 5 June 2018, the European Commission launched the first ever European Sustainability Award, to champion inspiring initiatives and cases aiming to achieve and implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainability Award focuses on a specific theme, linked to the annual theme chosen by the High Level Political Forum of the United Nations. For this year's edition, the theme of the award is “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.Cities will be able to apply under the category “Public bodies”, one of the four categories open (the other ones being Youth; Private bodies; Civil Society).

Within the category public bodies, a distinction has been made in between:
  • Subnational legal public entities reaching a population above 100 000 inhabitants
  • Subnational legal public entities reaching a population equal to/under 100 000 inhabitants.

The deadline for application is 14 September 2018. The winners will be selected by a jury of members of the Commission’s Multi-stakeholders Platform on SDGs, and will be announced in Spring 2019, during a high-level ceremony.
